Dunces class for me I think.

Midi - what is it with me and midi? we just dont seem to get on!!

"Simply plug in and click autodetect. The software will autodetect your midi
ports in the blink of an eye"

Ermm.... no it flippin well wont!!

Its kind of a long story which I wont bore you with.......

One thing, I think I've become the dumbest person on the planet (that's what
having kids does I guess)

I have a USB -> midi lead. The midi end has two plugs marked "Midi in" and
"Midi out"
Identical to this in fact:
Loading Image...

The device in question coincidentally has two midi sockets, one marked "midi
in" and one marked "midi out"

I assumed that the plug marked "midi in" plugs into the socket marked "midi
in"

Am I wrong?

(I did try the other way also but that didn't work either :-(( )

meh!!!!

Thanks for listening to my rabid ramblings!

Have you configured the program you are using to the right midi settings?

Remember a MIDI keyboard itself outputs nothing other than signals

Does this picture help?

usually midi out on one device goes to midi in on another device, for
instance midi out on a keyboard would go to midi in on your soundcard, it
depends on what function each device is performing as to which ins go to
which outs if you get my meaning..

On my everyday setup my midi keyboard uses its OUT to send midi data to the
IN on my pc which then sends the data to cubase and to whatever software
synth i am using to produce sounds.

Another way of looking at it is this.

Usually a device that will be producing sounds will be getting its
instructions via its midi IN and the devices sending midi data (eg:
keyboard, what note, length of note, velocity etc)do it via their midi OUT
socket.

There are also devices that have midu THRU but we wont get involved with
that for now (does what it says on the tin !)

Hey guys, thanks for the help.

I'm actually trying to connect a Line 6 POD to the pc via midi.

I'm now trying it on a different PC (this one) as it has a much simpler
audio chain.

I have taken the usb lead, plugged it into the pc. Winderz spotted it and
installed what it needed to.

The other end of the usb/midi cable was marked "in" and "out"
I have plugged the plug marked "In" into the socket on the pod marked "out"
I have plugged the plug marked "out" into the socket on the pod marked "in"

I configured the software manually as the autodetect didnt autodetect
anything!

Now if I twiddle knowbs in the software then the usb thingie lights up and
changes are made to the pod.

However if I try to load the pod's data to the software there is zero data
transfered.......

Did I say I hated midi?

I found this on a website:

MIDI In & Out - Connect POD to your MIDI equipment to select channel
memories or automate POD settings

Now it looks like to me that you can only use MIDI to control your pod via a
midi footswtch and the like not to output what you play in any way. What are
you trying to achieve?

Trying to transfer custom tones from line 6's custom tone web site to the
pod.
It can be done manually of course but its supposed to be easier using the
midi cable.
i.e. download the custom tone, open the software, load up the custom tone
and synch it into the pod.

Its supposed to be easier..........

Ha! sussed!

Read yet more line 6 PDF's and finally got there... kind of!

It doesn't auto load the model sets as it should nor will it automatically
transfer custom tones grabbed from the line 6 custom tone site.
But, you can dial stuff in manually and that does the job.

So, its a case of grabbing a custom tone and simply replicating the settings
which get transferred to the pod [1]

Then, having done that, the fun begins :-))))

[1] its a good idea to read the manual prior to doing this - especially the
part on saving patches coz if you press the wrong thing your settings that
you just spent 10 mins doing all disappear!!

Many thanks for the help - I felt such a numpty not knowing which plug to
stick where :-(

Update:
Turned out to be the usb-> midi cable. Essentially it couldn't handle larger
chunks of data.

I have now bought a good old fashioned 5 pin midi lead which goes into the
audiophile card
(I had one but I needed another as it uses 2; one for "In" and one for
"Out")

So, dumped the usb-> midi lead, plugged in the trusty 5 pin midi cables and
Bobs yer mums brother.

Sometimes older is better!
Maybe higher quality USB->midi cables are OK but this one on my pc didnt do
the job.

Cheers

Good to hear its sorted buddy. I think fundamentally speaking, MIDI hasn't
changed in donkeys years so essentially the original connectors are still
the best. It kind of makes sense that having a straight connector would be
better than having the computer translate the signal from MIDI through the
USB connector and back again at the other end.

Take it easy

Yep, midi is basically just a series of commands. That hasn't changed at all
to the best of my knowledge.
To say it worked like a dream is an understatement! and it was only £5.99
inc p&p off ebay. And, from purchase to delivery was about 16 hours. Bloody
impressive all round.

Yep, it maybe that on a more powerful PC the usb one would work OK
But going the simplest route is definitely the way to go.

Occam's razor wins every time.
