Discussion:
Any doctors in the house? Finger blister: Gig in two weeks (28th Nov). Eek!

After much practising and many frequent rehearsals, what I thought was just
a nice bit of hard skin on my ring finger (left hand, I play right handed) I
find I actually have a blister. I blame the solo for Black Velvet...

So, what to do? Do I pop it now and give it two weeks to heal (probably
missing at least next Friday's rehearsal)? Or do I leave it and hope it's OK
but run the risk of it popping closer to the big day?

What are your experiences of such things?

Just keep playing, mate. It'll be fine.

Ice it every chance you get and when you do play use (tone killing) finger
ease spray and you should be fine. Don't forget the ol super glue trick if
it does break on you at a gig. I've had to do it several times and it gets
you through the gig.

Squirt a load into a plastic bag and inhale long and deep until you're
standing outside of your body watching yourself get high. You won't
feel anything then.

Alternatively, you can daub a small amount onto the wounded area in
order to form a seal that will protect you from your strings.

Here's an apocryphal Stevie Ray take on that... super-glue
your left fingertips to your right forearm... then rip them off.

I'm tellin' ya, man... duct tape. You'll see...

That was a misquote. Stevie actually used to glue his fingertips to
his foreskin.

Duct tape's gonna stay on your finger? Seems like that would catch on
strings too.

One thin strip across the tip... one thin strip around the tip,
to hold the other. BTDT... it will get through at least a set.
Mold the across strip so that no edges poke out when the
other strip is wound around it.

Necessity is a mother!

Old military thing...March til you get huge blisters. The med comes
by, punctures the blister and injects superglue to glue the surface
skin back down.

I doubt the Stevie Ray story though. Most likely you'd find more of
your finger stuck to your forearm. (What the hell's the point of
ripping skin off your forearm, even if that would work?)

Blisters are how the callus forms. They will most likely harden up over
the next week so I wouldn't worry about it so much. Grit your teeth and
ride through the pain. Either that or have a cup of harden the fuck up.
:)

PS: the skin will peel off eventually anyway so get used to the
process. Eventually it gets easier but rule of thumb is to
play/practice at least once a day to maintain the skin thickness.

Depends on your age but at the half century mark blisters no longer
occur. When they did it was a few days maybe a week before they were a
memory. I've gigged with the left side of my right thumb cut to the
bone then super glued together for the gig (playing bass some thumb
slapping) only to have it star bleeding all over my guitar 3/4 of the
way through the gig. I've also gigged with stiches between my left
index and middle finger the same day I got stitched up.

1.) +1 for leave it be... blisters are the body's best band-aid.
2.) I've never had good luck with super-glue or NewSkin... my
best gig patch has been, BION... duct tape! A thin strip across
the tip of the finger, then another thin strip to wrap around as
a keeper... got me through the gig. Better than athletic tape,
medical tape... I've tried 'em all.
3.) *Completely* lay off until the finger's healed... this will
promote new callus instead of breaking the blister and losing
what you've got.

Hey... I resemble that remark! And shit happens...
been a while since I've had to tape a finger, though.

Same here :) Last gig I did while 'injured' so to speak was when I cut
the 'web' between my index and FU finger on my right hand cutting an
onion like a dumbass. Went to the ER and got about 10 stitches but
still played out that evening. I didn't have to drag any heavy gear
for a couple weeks!

I've used every kind of tape on my thumb back in the 80's when I
gigged on bass. Super glue worked best. It was actually developed
for medic and MASH triage units in the 70's.

Another trick is to 'inject' supoer glue into the blister pocket after
you drain it. Sometimes you just can't wait on mother nature.

Well, the (professional) medical advice I got was to put a plaster on it
tightly to leep the dead skin held against the new skin thus helping it to
heal and preventing build-up of fluid.

SO glad I don't have to resort to super glue!
