Not a bad job there, Nod Jnr did a great job on the drums, the rhythm guitar
didnt sound right, i think it was down to the mix, it seemed to come out of
the left a bit too much, needs to be spread left and right more and sit
further back in the mix .
Liked the lead, still plenty of scope for some serious whammy bar !

A nice synth pad filling the background would go a treat with it , theres
tons of freebie Vsti around so get experimenting !

Definitely worth keeping 'cos as you get more experienced with the recording
and mixing side of things you can always add, change, remix it etc.

I expect to see this on Youtube with some suitable Dr Who clips playing

You could do that - its all been done in parts - learn one part, record it,
learn the next part.
Its taken me about 3 1/2 weeks to make that track.

Keep at it, you'll get there.

Well, I meant I did the worked out the bass, recorded that, then worked on
the rhythm, recorded that etc....

Though there are *plenty* of tunes out there that are recorded in the way
you are thinking.

ISTR that Bohemian Rhapsody was one that was not (initially) possible to
play live as that was recorded bit by bit
then finally *glued* together.

There are others but I cant think of them off hand :-(

But, at the end of the day, if your aim is to record stairway and doing it
phrase by phrase works best for you, then go for it!

Hows that coming anyways?

Not really bothered with that at the mo, my wonderfull tonight is passable
(by which i mean mrs daZza actually recognises it LOL ) everbody hurts is
coming along also, trying to finger pick it but with sausage fingers and a
nasty case of nail biting im still quicker and cleaner with a pick!
Not had much chance to practice the last week as i move into a new abode
this coming monday so been bust packing, still not packed the 4 geetars yet
though ;-)
Gonna have a spare room in the new place, mrs daZza wants a nursey/guest
room, i want a music/games room :-)
It is getting easier i must admit, chords come a lot quicker and cleaner now
and i dont have to keep looking at the neck i "know" where the strings are
with my left hand, still have to concentrate on hitting the right string
with the pick when doing lead stuff tho, if i get 1/2 way as good as my son
(21) i'll be happy

To be honest, I'm crap at mixing. IIRC the rhythm is panned 70% one way and
the bass 70% the other way.
I have no idea how I would make it sit further back in the mix - I did drop
the level down on the rhythm a bit.
I still have a tendancy to want to turn everything up to max!

Yeah, its really begging for more whammy - I used my ibanez for the lead,
its a cheapo guitar with a suitably cheapo whammy.
So, as soon as you apply whammy, the thing goes out of tune. Basically I
played the first few bars (with the whammy) stopped, re tuned, played the
rest then whammy'd the last chord (aka the "death chord" ). There are plenty
of openings for more in there though :-)

Yeah, I'm gonna have another try with this one - I just love the tune. I
wanted this version to be fairly "straight" so tried to avoid too many
effects - I tried to do it in a way that could be done on a stage say. I
plan on doing another version and cram it with lots of fx :-)

I still want to tweak this one a little, I'll try adjusting the pan on the
rhythm, also tweak the opening tardis a little (cheers Angof for the advice
there)
Watch this space......

Clips? naw, we're planning on a live version - gonne be tricky but basically
film each part seperately them put them together so its a 4 screens in one
kind of thing. It will probably be a nightmare and I'll just put up Dr Who
clips :-) You'll have to subsribe to know how we get on :-)

Thanks for having a listen guys and for the feedback, its much appreciated.

Improved the intro (I think its better)
twiddled with the levels
Reduced the phaser on the lead and added a touch of delay.

Hopefully its better now

I'm still only getting the rythm guitar out of the left side, you could
duplicate that track and pan 1 left and one right, just reduce the volumes
of them a bit and if you offset/delay the track panned right so it starts
around 15 - 20 milliseconds after the track panned left that will really
make a difference.

also listened to Eastern Haze, reminded me of the Doors, loved it very
trippy !

Wont get to do this til tommorow but how does this sound:
duplicate the rhythm then pan one left 75%, pan the other right 75% and
offset 15-20 ms?

Would I be in the right ball park?

that sounds good, you can adjust the pan to suit the effect you want, the
wider the pan the "more stereo" it sounds.
you could also try some reverb with lots of pre-delay on it to make it sit
back in the mix.

this is just a quick way to make a bigger background, you will need to
adjust the volumes of the two tracks, one will seem considerably louder.

As you are finding and going to find out, mixing is the hardest part, theres
a gazillion articles on the web, and although a lot of it is down to
personal taste, theres also a lot of things that are stock in trade, like
compression on bass and drums, rolling off the lows on acoustic guitars etc
etc.

Most articles will tell you its better to remove frequencies than add them
to a part, if for instance the hi-hats need more sparkle, roll off some of
the other frequencies rather than add top to the hats, the general idea is
to give each sound its own space in the mix rather than have them all
competing for the same space.

It doesnt take long, you'll soon have a few mixing tricks up your sleeve, as
they say, google is your friend ! :-)

sounds like a good task for Nod jnr, sort out some stock in trade,
handydandy, niftythrifty mixing tips.

Look forward to hearing the noo mix !

hi m8 sorry for the late reply but been away for a few days and no internet,
very peaceful !

ok just listened, IMHO it sounds a lot lot better, the second guitar fills
out the back of the soundstage nicely.

you see, youre getting the hang of it already, that extra delayed track
is a quick way to get a double track effect without playing the whole thing
twice.

what do you and jnr think of this new version ? at the end of the day its
your music so you can mix it how you like, but personally i think this new
mix is far more pro sounding

nice job.

Yep, makes a *huge* difference.

Yep, had a quick scout on google (it helps now knowing some terminology so
searches are a bit easier)
When I first cloned the track and offset I accidentally offset by 150ms
instead of 15ms. To be honest it sounded
pretty damn good - though it was heading down the "bit weird" route so made
the correction.
I also read another technique - duplicate the lead guitar (clone it or play
it twice) if cloned, offset by 15ms.
Then, pitch shift the second track. Apparently, this is a favourite
technique of a certain Steve Vai!
I haven't tried it as yet mind you.
Maybe I should have another tinker and go all out, see how off the wall I
can get it to sound :-)

The good thing with that tune is you can approach it from so many angles and
still be "right".
Post by Dr. Hackenbush

He's more interested in xbox360 to be honest LOL
Others have commented on how much space the mix had and that they loved the
mic'ing (I just shoved the mic in front of the amp)

A few have said the overall sound is classic Hawkwind. The space, the tone
etc. I'd say that was fairly large compliment :-)
I also pointed out I'd had huge help with the mix etc

I've submitted the track to whomix
http://whomix.trilete.net/
But I think I'd just missed an update so will have to wait for the next one
to see if I'm added.

some great versions on there if anyone gets the chance to listen

Also have to finish the video - waiting on no66y jnr for that .....

Many thanks once again - much appreciated.
